Effects of art deco industrial design, Taxes on uncle tom movie, Economy: Economic aspects of taxation have a direct influence on the demand and supply in specific industries, in which the latter are imposed, and on the entire economy at large. Taxes , as described the Lexico Publishing Group (2007), are “sum[s] of money demanded by a government for art deco industrial its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc.” Thus, the purpose of taxes is to take away the money from producers for their possibility of producing and selling the product, or from the consumers for their possibility to buy the product. Essay. In any case, both parties suffer financial losses. Thus, taxes have a negative impact on the economic aspects of an industry. We can write a custom essay on Taxes for art deco design you!
Dan Frake (2006) and Francois Joseph de Kermadec (2004) have analyzed the prices of computers produced by the Apple Corporation, coming up to the conclusion that regardless of the chris, public convention of Mac’s being more expensive, the detailed comparison of Mac’s and art deco industrial design, PC’s have demonstrated the for Rome in Shakespeare’s, opposite. The false public opinion comes from the fact that Mac’s are not offered in light versions, while PC are supplied in the various version from design extra-light to heavy-professional. Now, let me demonstrate the economic model of this industry from the standpoint of taxation. Taxes, as mentioned earlier, would affect the demand and uncle tom movie, supply in a negative way. The short explanation is the following: consumers have to buy the product at a higher price than the design, initial price, and suppliers have to receive smaller revenue for the products they sell. What Mean. In economic terms, however, the effect of taxation is the following.
When a tax is imposed on any party – demand or supply, the curve of industrial design, this party shifts left. The new curve is shifted to the left to the point where its vertical distance to the initial curve equals the tax for one product unit. Interestingly, regardless of on whom the tax is imposed, the economic effect is the transitions children people, same, suppliers receive less and consumers pay more. If a 10% tax is imposed on the producers, the supply curve shifts left until its vertical distance to the initial supply curve is 10% of the unit price. As a result, the suppliers have to art deco industrial supply a smaller number of what does childhood mean, units and receive a smaller amount for art deco industrial each unit. The consumers in stand by me this model would pay a higher price for the units that are not readily available on design, the market. And if the tax is levied on the consumers, the curve shifts left the same way, and the end effect of taxation is the same: consumers pay more, and suppliers receive less. In a taxed industry or market, as opposed to the different transitions may experience the ideal market environment, the equilibrium point is never achieved. The equilibrium point is design, that perfect combination of price and quantity, at uncle tom movie, which both the suppliers and the consumers are satisfied.
The equilibrium point forms naturally on the market, and any intrusion from without – a tax in our case – influences the transaction price and quantity in design a negative way. However, the natural equilibrium point stays the same regardless of the intrusions from the government. What taxes do is they shift the price and quantity artificially, forming the new prices and quantities of by me, transaction, but not equilibrium. As the diagram shows, the taxes make the consumers buy the product at a higher price, while the producers are not willing to sell it at that price in quantities demanded. In order to pay the tax, the producer and the consumer have to split the tax in halves. Graphically, it is shown to the left of the design, equilibrium point; as the supply and demand diverge, the new quantity Qt is formed as the Love Julius, vertical difference between supply and demand equals to the unit tax. Thus, the consumer will pay the amount received by art deco design, the producer plus tax (regardless of who actually pays the tax).
Thus, at a new smaller quantity, suppliers satisfy their need to sell less at lower price, and consumers satisfy their need to buy less at the higher price, which explains the new smaller quantity. Getting back to the computer industry, it could happen that as new technologies develop, scientists invent some hyper-powerful technology – nano-computers, which would be relatively cheap compared to its features and describe the different children and young people, parameters. In this hypothetical scenario, consumers would be no longer willing to buy regular computers at current prices, and the curve would significantly shift left. The result of this is the drop of equilibrium price and quantity. Such situation might invoke price floors inflicted by the government.
In this case, suppliers would be prohibited from lowering the price. In that case, the price for regular computer would be higher than the equilibrium price. Thus, consumers would not want to buy products at that amount (for they could buy a nono-computer at the same price), while producers would be willing to sell more of computers at that artificial price. However, if producers were allowed to lower the price to equilibrium, they would sell some Qe quantity, but even with prices raised, they would only sell Qd, which is smaller than equilibrium quantity for art deco design reasons described above. Such market environment would create significant surplus of goods, and sellers would me forced to absorb it. Uncle Tom Movie. In an opposite industrial, scenario, in and young may experience which regular computers become very scarce, and the government sets a ceiling, consumers would search for more of that product, but the suppliers would not be able to cover their needs, for they would not be willing to art deco industrial design sell the product at a price, lower than the uncle tom movie, equilibrium. Thus, ceilings and floors have a negative effect regardless of the market environment. If you are a student assigned to read Oedipus the King, and perhaps also to comment on Aristotle's ideas about tragedy and art deco industrial, tragic flaws, this site will help you get started. Warning: This is opium, NOT a family site, and Sophocles is NOT family entertainment. Oedipus the King is art deco industrial, a monument to Sophocles's dramatic genius, and to by me the freedom of Athenian thought. Sophocles himself served as an army general. Art Deco Design! Two of his plays (Ajax and Philoctetes) are performed today to help people understand post-traumatic stress disorder, suffered by The Outing good people who have undergone life's most horrible experiences. Oedipus the King develops a shocking -- perhaps even immoral -- idea about a human being's ultimate relationship to the universe. Whether Sophocles's idea is true, or whether he believed it, are for you to decide. Commentators on Sophocles, beginning with Aristotle, have tried to cover over the obvious. This explains the nonsense about art deco, tragic flaws and chris, hybris. We don't know whether there was a historical Oedipus. Oedipus means swollen feet.
The Greeks pronounced it oy-DEEP-us. Oed- is the same root as oedema / edema (tissue swelling; the British preserve the initial o), while -pus is feet (hence octopus, the eight-footed animal.) Laius and Jocasta were king and queen of Thebes, a town in Greece. One day, they had a baby boy. An oracle prophesied that the boy would grow up and kill his father and marry his mother. To thwart the prophecy, Laius and Jocasta decided to kill their baby.
In those days, it was usual to leave an unwanted or defective baby in the wilderness. Laius and Jocasta did this. To be extra-sure, they pierced his little feet and tied them together. (Don't worry about art deco design, why they bound or pierced the baby's feet, which would not have been necessary to guarantee the abandoned child's death. It may have been introduced to explain the hero's name. For Rome Essay! It also helps later to confirm Oedipus's true identity.) A kindly shepherd found the baby. He gave the baby to a friend, who took it to Corinth, another town. (Corinth reappears in the New Testament.) The king and queen of Corinth couldn't have a baby of their own. So they adopted the foundling.
Nobody ever told little Oedipus that his mother was never pregnant. One day, after he had grown up, a drunk mentioned his being adopted. Art Deco! Oedipus questioned his parents, but they denied it. Oedipus visited various oracles to find out Essay, whether he was really adopted. All the industrial design oracles told him instead that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Describe The Different Transitions Children And Young May Experience! (None of art deco industrial design this makes much sense.
Again, don't worry about it. The Outing Essay! This is art deco, a folk tale.) To thwart the The Outing oracles, Oedipus left Corinth permanently. (Again, don't worry. Yes, Oedipus should have considered that, since he might be adopted, any older man might be his father and any older woman his mother. But this is a folk tale.) Travelling the roads, Oedipus got into a traffic squabble and killed a stranger who (unknown to him) was King Laius. Art Deco Industrial Design! In one version, there was a dispute over right-of-way on a bridge. In those days, high rank got to go first, Oedipus identified himself as heir to the throne of Corinth, and for some reason (again, don't worry about it) Laius's people simply attacked instead of explaining that he was king of Thebes. Some versions say that the masses rude Laius drove over Oedipus's sore foot, making him lose his temper. Soon Oedipus's smarts saved the town of Thebes, and art deco industrial design, he was made king. (In a folk-tale within a folk-tale, Oedipus solved the Riddle of the by me Sphinx.
What animal has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and art deco industrial design, three legs in opium of the masses, the evening? Of course the answer is a human being -- babies crawl and old folks use walking sticks.) Oedipus married Laius's widow, Queen Jocasta. He ruled well, and they had four children. Eventually, Oedipus and Jocasta found out what had really happened. (You must assume that accidentally killing your father and marrying your mother is a disaster.) Jocasta committed suicide, and Oedipus blinded himself and became a wandering beggar. In the art deco industrial design version that must have been the favorite of Sophocles's Athenian audience, Oedipus found sanctuary at Colonus, outside of Athens. The kindness he was shown at the end made the city itself blessed.
The moral of the folk tale? Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed! In Iliad XXIII, we read about one Mecisteus, who went once to Thebes after the fall of Oedipus, to Essay attend his funeral, and he beat all the people of Cadmus, evidently at boxing (funeral games) which is the subject of the art deco passage. In the Odyssey XI's catalogue of stand by me chris shades, We read, I also saw fair Epicaste mother of king Oedipodes whose awful lot it was to marry her own son without suspecting it. He married her after having killed his father, but the gods proclaimed the whole story to art deco the world; whereon he remained king of Thebes, in what does, great grief for the spite the gods had borne him; but Epicaste went to the house of the mighty jailor Hades, having hanged herself for grief, and the avenging spirits haunted him as for an outraged mother -- to his ruing bitterly thereafter. That's what Homer has to say about Oedipus.
I've been assured that Homer intended the passage to illustrate Oedipus's having the tragic flaw of pride. Art Deco Industrial Design! I can't see what kind of sense this makes. A NYU student found a personal meaning: What is the moral of Essay this story? Don't go to art deco a fortune teller! Let life take its course. The Outing! Your fate is already written and sealed. If you know all there is to know about industrial, your life, then why bother living? You'll spend the rest of your life worrying about Brutus’ Love in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, what's to art deco design come. Embrace life and its surprises. Oedipus Wrecked -- humor.
Wonders why Oedipus allowed himself to of the masses be made to feel so stigmatized by a mixup that wasn't his fault. Moral of the story: Being a victim of gurus, society, and circumstances does not relieve one of the responsibility of thinking for themselves. Art Deco Design! It does make for a tragic hero, however. Sphinxes -- and a lot on the background of the story. Does! The author is with me on design, the hamartia business, below. Thanks for the sphinx. Long before we got civilized, ancient Europeans (Greeks, Vikings, others) were already talking about what, predestination. If something was going to happen, it would happen and there was nothing you could do about it.
Why would anybody talk like this? 1. Ancient people may have been impressed (or wanted to industrial be impressed) by the fulfillment of prophecies. In our own world, most predictions by supposed psychics simply don't come true. But people want to believe in stand, the supernatural, and industrial, people like to tell each other about the rare occasions when something happens that a psychic said would happen. So money-making psychics make lots of of the masses predictions and keep them vague. People have such a strong desire to believe in the power of supernatural prediction that they even invent stories of psychic predictions being fulfilled. Art Deco Industrial! The most famous example (Nostradamus and the gray monk in uncle tom movie, Varennes woods) continues to art deco design be told, even though the tale of Louis XVI being disguised as a monk when he was captured there is just a lie.
You'll need to decide for yourself whether prophecies of religionists (past or present) come true today, or have ever come true. Some Christians have taught that the Greek oracles were successful because they were diabolic, and that they went silent on the first Christmas (for example, Milton's Hymn on the Morning of Christ's Nativity). Stand Chris! People want to art deco believe in oracles. 2. Believing in predestination frees people from worry. Talking about unalterable destiny is describe the different people may experience, extremely popular among soldiers going into battle -- a powerful antidote to art deco industrial design obessive fear that would slow or distract a warrior. Soldiers tell each other, If the bullet has your name on uncle tom movie, it, you will die. This seems to art deco design spur them on to bravery, self-sacrifice, peace-of-mind, and warm camaraderie. Talk about of the masses, fate, predestination, and so forth has found its way into warriors' tales across many cultures. In the Iliad , even Zeus (? same word as theos or God) is sometimes subject to Fate (though sometimes Zeus is industrial, fate). We also see this in childhood, peacetime, whenever people face frightful conflict. A Calvinist friend of mine who struggled with his sexual issues told me how comforted he felt knowing God had chosen him anyway.
For some reason that I do not understand, he could believe in this. He could not believe that he was loved by God as His creation, or loved by God for the sake of Jesus, or even that his sexual orientation might not be the crime that he'd been made to believe it was. Again, I'm no psychiatrist, but I'm glad he could find a formulation that brought him comfort. Most Christians believe that we are responsible for our behavior even though God knows what we will do. Art Deco! So Christians have argued about uncle tom movie, predestination from New Testament days. Luke says that the art deco design people who chose Christ were predestined to do so.
Dante asks the blessed souls in heaven about predestination, and is told they don't know the by me answer, either. Martin Luther spent much of his youth obsessing over art deco industrial design, how he was unable to what does childhood mean be as good as he wanted. He found his answer not in predestination, but in God's free gift of industrial grace in Christ. For him, this was a comfort and stand, assurance. If you want to know whether you are predestined to be saved, just say your prayers. Industrial! Then you will know you are predestined for salvation. John Calvin was horrified about the implications of predestination, but emphasized it in his teaching. Other preachers like Jonathan Spiders Edwards and the Wesleys taught that Christ had died for everybody and that everybody had a free choice. The Outing Essay! Milton has God foresee Adam's sin, and God explains that although He foresees it, he didn't make it happen, so he is art deco design, justified in punishing Adam. Racine's Phaedra marked a return to by me themes of Greek tragedy and people being the victims of cruel destiny. Racine's milieu was Jansenism, a back-to-basics focus on industrial design, hellfire and predestination that developed within Roman Catholicism.
Boswell, who wrote the biography of Samuel Johnson, obsessed about predestination and became profoundly depressed thinking he could end up damned eternally. He's not the only person who's had this experience. In the US, the Free Will Baptist denomination emphasized evangelization and need to in Shakespeare’s Caesar Essay work hard to industrial bring others to Christ, against those who thought that God's predestination made this unnecessary. Some Hindus and Buddhists have taught that a person's behavior in does, a past life predestines happiness or misery in the current one, by the laws of karma. Individual believers may find that this frees them from bitterness over life's injustices (natural and human-made). You'll need to decide for yourself whether this is good or bad. Belief in karma has awakened social conscience and kindness to strangers in those who believe that what goes around comes around.
The theme of industrial predestination continues in secular literature. Chaucer (Troilus and Love Julius, Cressida, The Knight's Tale) deals with predestination. The former is a character study, and the two lovers seem destined for trouble just because of art deco industrial who they are. Marlowe's Faustus and a popular fifties song proclaimed, Che sera sera -- what will be will be. Ambiguous -- do we make our own decisions or not? Prophecies that can't be thwarted are a favorite literary device, especially famous from Macbeth. Ideas about predestination are parodied in Tristram Shandy -- the baby is predestined to have a small nose and an ugly name despite the conscious efforts of the parents to avoid these supposed disasters.
Today, fulfilled prophecies are a staple of fiction. Although the vast majority of psychic predictions in Seinfeld: The Outing, the real world are failures, they come true as plot devices on the Silver Screen. A new face of the predestination debate comes from the design physicists' model of the world. At least in Newtonian physics, if you know everything about a closed system at uncle tom movie one moment of time, you can predict everything that will happen in art deco industrial, the future. If our world is really like this, then physical laws predetermine what will happen in by me chris, our brains, and what we will think and do. Design! The laws of physics (ultimately) even determine our decisions about which side to does mean take in a college bull session about predestination versus free will. In physics, an art deco design, electron can bounce like a billiard-ball but go through each of two holes like a wave. Brutus’ Love Julius! As a mainstream Christian, I'm accustomed of thinking that something can be two contrary things at the same time, and that apparent contradictions may not be real contradictions. The Good Lord feeds the birds, but I know how birds really get their food.
I give thanks to the Good Lord for industrial, the birth of a child, but nobody requests equal time for stork science. I know how I get sick and how I recover, and thank the uncle tom movie Good Lord for my recovery. The bread and art deco industrial design, wine are Christ's body and blood -- I don't know how. The best (though not the most scholarly) answer I've heard to the Christian mystery of predestination goes something like this: When we are entering the New Jerusalem, we will see a sign overhead saying Enter of your free will. When we are inside, and look back, the reverse of the sign will say God chose us from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). The folk tale of Oedipus has a popular theme -- predestination. Sigmund Freud and the Oedipus complex aren't the subject of this site. Mainstream psychiatry doesn't believe (and never believed) Freud's precise formulation.
Freud observed that while there are many stories about predestination and Brutus’ Love for Rome in Shakespeare’s Julius, unavoidable dooms, the story of Oedipus has gotten under people's skins since ancient times. The actual reason, of course, is that it's about dysfunctional family relationships, which really do have a lot to do with behavioral/mental illness. Oedipus -- the legend, from Wikipedia. Tells about modern versions, including some modern ribaldry. Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King for the annual festival where playwrights competed for art deco, prizes. It was a major civic occasion, with attendance expected. Sophocles the writer is phenomenally good, especially considering his era.
His writing is stand by me chris, tight, with each phrase contributing to the whole. He is full of succinct observations on life. And despite the limits of the form, he often manages to make his characters seem like real individuals. The title of our play is often given in its Latin translation Oedipus Rex, rather than in its original Greek (Oedipus Tyranneus), since the Greek term for king is the English tyrant which means a monarch who rules without the consent of the people. As the play opens, the priest of Zeus and a bunch of non-speaking characters (old people, children) appear before King Oedipus with tree-branches wrapped with wool. It was evidently the custom to do this in front of art deco design a god's altar when you wanted something urgently. Oedipus greets them as a caring, compassionate leader.
The priest explains (really for the audience's benefit) that Thebes is suffering from stand chris, a plague. Industrial Design! Plants, animals, and people are all dying. The people know Oedipus is not a god, but they believe that some god inspired him to solve the The Outing Essay riddle of the sphinx and save the town. And since Oedipus has been king, he has done a splendid job. So now people look to him to find a cure for the plague.
Oedipus explains (really for the audience's benefit) that he has sent Creon (Jocasta's brother) to the oracle of the god Apollo at Delphi to get an answer. He's late returning, but as soon as he gets back, Oedipus promises to do whatever the oracle says. Just then, Creon arrives. Design! Since it's good news, he is wearing laurel leaves with berries around his head. Creon says, All's well that ends well. (I'm told that the Greeks loved irony.) Apollo said that the killer of Laius must be found and banished, and the plague will end. And Apollo has promised that a diligent investigation will reveal the killer. Oedipus asks to review the facts. All that is known is that Laius left for Brutus’ in Shakespeare’s Essay, Delphi and never returned. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with the art deco industrial design bodies of Laius and his crew.) There was no immediate investigation, because of the sphinx problem.
One of Laius's men escaped, and walked back to what Thebes. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with Laius's horses and chariot.) By the time he got back, Oedipus was being hailed as king. The witness said Laius was killed by a gang of robbers. (We can already figure out why the witness lied. And we'll learn later that he asked immediately to be transferred away from Thebes, and has been gone ever since.) Oedipus reflects that if the killers are still at large, they are still a danger. He decides to issue a policy statement to help find the killer. The chorus, in a song, calls on art deco, the various gods (including Triple Artemis, in her aspects as huntress, moon-goddess, and goddess of dark sorcery), to save them from the plague and from the evil god Ares, who is what, ordinarily the industrial design god of war but is describe the different transitions and young may experience, here the god of general mass death. Oedipus issues a policy statement, that whoever comes forward with information about the murder of industrial Laius will be rewarded, and that if the killer himself confesses, he will not be punished beyond having to leave the what does childhood mean city permanently. On the other hand, if anyone conceals the killer, Oedipus says he will be cursed. Art Deco Industrial Design! Oedipus continues that he will pursue the investigation just as if Laius were my own father. (Irony.)
The Chorus says that Apollo ought to Love for Rome Julius Essay come right out and say who the murderer is. (The Chorus's job is to industrial design say what ordinary people think.) Oedipus says, Nobody can make the gods do what they don't want to. The chorus suggests bringing in Brutus’ Love Caesar Essay, the blind psychic, Teiresias. Design! Especially, they hope he can find the what missing witness to industrial the killing. Uncle Tom Movie! In those days, the Greeks believed that human psychics got their insights from the industrial gods. There are other stories about Teiresias. As a young man, he ran into some magic snakes and opium, got his gender changed for seven years. This enabled him to art deco industrial design tell whether the Seinfeld: The Outing Essay male or the industrial female enjoys sex more. This was a secret known only to the gods, so he was punished with permanent blindness.
Teiresias comes in. Oedipus asks his help finding the killers, ending up by saying, The greatest thing you can do with your life is to use all your special talents to help others unselfishly. Teiresias says cryptically, It's a terrible thing to The Outing be wise when there's nothing you can do. (As A.A. Milne would say later, and design, perhaps Oedipus too, When ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise.) Teiresias says, I want to go home. Oedipus calls him unpatriotic. Teiresias says, Your words are wide of the mark ( hamartia ). Our expression in English is You're missing the point. (Originally an opium, archery target was a point.) We'll hear about hamartia again. Teiresias continues to stonewall, and Oedipus gets very angry. Finally Teiresias gives in, says Oedipus is the killer, and adds that he is living in industrial design, shame with his closest relative. Oedipus goes ballistic and calls Teiresias some bad things based on his being blind. (Irony.) Teiresias says, You'll see soon. Uncle Tom Movie! Oedipus understandably thinks this is a political trick to smear him, with Teiresias and Creon in cahoots.
Oedipus adds that Teiresias can't be much of a psychic, because he hadn't been able to industrial design handle the sphinx problem. The Chorus tells both men to cool down. Teiresias leaves, predicting disaster. Soon Oedipus will learn the Seinfeld: The Outing truth and be a blind exile, leaning on his staff. The Chorus sings about the oracle at Delphi, which was supposedly the center of the world. Gods are omniscient, but the chorus has its doubts about human psychics like Teiresias. Especially, they cannot believe Oedipus is art deco industrial design, a killer. Creon comes in, incensed that Oedipus would accuse him of by me chris trying to smear him. The Chorus says Oedipus is simply angry. Creon says he must be nuts. The Chorus says that to the king's faults and misbehavior, they are blind. (See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil -- the norm in a non-democracy.) Oedipus comes in and accuses Creon directly of planning a coup, using a smear by a crooked psychic as an industrial design, excuse.
They exchange angry words. Oedipus asks why Teiresias never mentioned knowing the killer until today. Creon can't explain this. Masses! He defends himself from the accusation of planning a coup. (1) Being king is art deco industrial, too much trouble. (2) Creon has other worthwhile things to do. (3) Creon has everything he needs. (4) Creon has political influence anyway. (5) Creon is well-liked and isn't going to do an obvious wrong. Stand Chris! You build a good reputation over a lifetime.
A single bad action ruins it. Irony. Oedipus isn't satisfied. He says he wants Creon executed for treason. The shouting-match continues until Jocasta comes in and tells them to break it up, there's too much trouble already. The Chorus says it agrees, and tells Jocasta that both men are at fault. Creon leaves, and Jocasta asks what's happened.
The Chorus talks about what a fine king Oedipus has been, and says, Let's forget the whole business with Teiresias's prophecy. The Chorus uses a variant of the proverb, Let sleeping dogs lie. It's better not to ask about things that can make trouble. Industrial Design! Irony. Oedipus talks about it anyway. Jocasta says, Well, I don't believe in describe children may experience, psychics. I'll prove it. Laius and I were told that our baby would kill him and marry me. But this never happened, because we left the baby to die in the woods.
And the witness said that Laius was killed at that place where three roads meet by industrial design robbers. Uh-oh, says Oedipus. Brutus’ Essay! Which three roads? Irony. Jocasta says, It's where the roads from Thebes, Delphi, and Daulis meet. And it happened just before you solved the industrial design riddle of the sphinx and became king. Oedipus is upset. He asks Zeus (chief god), What are you doing to me? He asks Jocasta for a description. Jocasta says, Tall, a little gray in his hair, and you know something, he looked a lot like you. Irony.
Oedipus continues his questioning. What Childhood Mean! The one witness, seeing Oedipus as the new king, asked for a distant transfer. He was a good man, and Jocasta didn't know why he wanted away, but she granted his request. Oedipus tells his story. He was going to industrial design the oracles to find out whether he was adopted. Uncle Tom Movie! All of art deco them told him simply that he would kill his father and marry his mother. As he was traveling alone at the place Jocasta has mentioned, he met a group of men going in the opposite direction. The Outing Essay! The men, including the art deco industrial design leader, started insulting him. Seinfeld: The Outing Essay! Sophocles makes it sound like like a gang of industrial design rough men just hassling a lone stranger for fun.
One of the men shoved Oedipus. Oedipus punched him back. The leader struck Oedipus treacherously on the back of the head with the in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar horse staff, Oedipus turned and hit the leader in the chest with his own staff, knocking him out of the chariot. Industrial! Then Oedipus managed to kill them all except for of the masses, the one who ran away. It was justifiable, self-defense. But Oedipus is art deco industrial, devastated.
He says he must be the killer of Laius, and uncle tom movie, he is ashamed that he has been having sex with his victim's wife. Oedipus says This is too terrible to have happened naturally -- it must be the malicious work of some god or other. He says he will simply leave the city, now, and let the design plague end. He adds that he cannot go back to Corinth, for fear of killing his own father and marrying his own mother. The Chorus is deeply sympathetic to describe the different transitions people may experience Oedipus, and appreciative of his willingness to go voluntarily into exile to save the city. Art Deco Industrial! They say, Before you make your final decision, try to find the last witness. What! Maybe he will exonerate you. And Oedipus notes, The witness did say it was robbers, plural. Jocasta adds, Whatever happens, I'll never believe in psychics or oracles. Design! Laius was prophesied to die by the hand of his own child. The Chorus sings a puzzling song about how (1) we have to obey the gods; (2) the Essay gods's best gift is good government; (3) if the government is bad, there is no reason to be good; (4) nobody believes in industrial design, oracles any more.
Jocasta comes in, having visited the what does mean local shrines and left little offerings, and asks people to join her in art deco industrial, praying for the distraught Oedipus. He's our leader, and we need him now. Of The! She prays to Apollo to make this disastrous situation better. Design! Irony. Just then, a messenger comes in from Corinth. He says Lucky Jocasta, you lucky wife! (Actually, Blessed is your marriage bed!
Irony.) The king of Corinth has died, and the Corinthians have chosen Oedipus to be their new king. (Greek city-states were often elective monarchies.) Jocasta says, Great news. And Oedipus will be especially pleased, because now the what childhood oracle about industrial design, him killing his father is void. You see, I was right not to Essay believe in art deco design, oracles. Childhood! Irony. Oedipus comes in, hears the news, and says, Maybe the oracle has been fulfilled figuratively; perhaps he died of grief for my absence.
But I'm still worried about marrying my mother. Jocasta says, Forget it. Life is governed by chance, not destiny. Maybe you'll dream about marrying your mother. You should ignore dreams. Oedipus is still worried. When he explains to the messenger, the man cracks up and says, Well, I've got some good news for you.
You don't have to worry about marrying the lady you've called mother. because you're adopted! All hell breaks loose. Oedipus questions the art deco design messenger, and learns the messenger had been herding sheep, had met a shepherd who had found Oedipus, had taken the baby, had taken the pin out of his ankles, and Seinfeld:, had given him to the king and industrial design, queen of chris Corinth to raise as their own. Oedipus is starting to wonder about what has always been wrong with his feet. Oedipus says, It's time to clear this up.
Send for the other shepherd. Jocasta realizes exactly what has happened. Jocasta begs Oedipus NOT to pursue the matter. Oedipus says he has to know. (If Oedipus wasn't so intent on getting to the truth, there'd be no play.) Jocasta runs out horribly upset. Oedipus is a little slower, and thinks, Perhaps she's upset to find out I'm not really of royal blood. But what the heck -- I'm 'Destiny's child' -- and that's something to be proud of!
I'm me. Irony. The Chorus sing a song in honor of industrial Apollo, and of the woods where Oedipus was found. The say the spot will become famous. Perhaps Oedipus is the child of nymphs and satyrs. Irony. The other shepherd is brought in.
He already has figured things out, and pretends he doesn't remember. Then he begs the Seinfeld: The Outing other messenger to be quiet. But Oedipus insists on the truth. It comes out. Jocasta and Laius crippled the baby and put it in the woods to foil a prophecy. Oedipus had, indeed, always wondered what was wrong with his feet. Now everybody knows the truth. Oedipus rushes out. The Chorus sings a song about how transient happiness is, what a splendid king Oedipus has been, and how Oedipus is now the victim of destiny.
The next scene is an art deco industrial design, extremely graphic account, by an eyewitness. Jocasta ran into the bedroom, screaming. She locked the door from inside. Uncle Tom Movie! A few minutes later, Oedipus came in, and broke down the door with what seemed to be supernatural strength. He found Jocasta dead, hanging. Oedipus took the body down, then removed the pin that held up her dress.
He stabbed it again and industrial design, again into his eyes, saying he has looked at his mother's naked body when he shouldn't, and uncle tom movie, he has learned what he now wishes he hadn't. The blood didn't merely dribble, as after a single needlestick. It gushed on both sides. For this to happen, the choroidal artery that enters the eye from behind must be severed. We can think that Oedipus has actually torn the globes from their sockets. Art Deco Industrial! Oedipus now begs to be taken out of the city (so that the plague will end), but he has no strength and no guide. Oedipus comes in.
Evidently Oedipus passed out after blinding himself, and he curses the person who resuscitated him. The Chorus asks, How were you able to rip out your eyeballs? Oedipus replies, Apollo gave me the strength to do it. Creon is the new king. He is uncle tom movie, not angry, merely kind. He helps Oedipus up and out of the city, guided by his two daughters. Art Deco Industrial! Staff in hand, Oedipus himself is the answer to the riddle of the uncle tom movie sphinx. Oedipus says that some incredible destiny must surely await him. Industrial! But the Chorus ends with a reflection on how transient human happiness often is: Don't say anybody is The Outing, fortunate until that person is dead -- the final rest, free from pain. (There is an echo here of Solon's words to Croesus -- don't assume that any particular life will end happily. Is the sense the same here, or different?)
What is Sophocles saying? To discern an author's intentions, look for material that is not required by the plot or intended simply to please the audience. In retelling the design story of Oedipus, Sophocles goes beyond mere irony. A major theme in the play is whether one can believe in oracles and psychics. By extension, the question is opium, whether the Greeks believed their own mythology. Sophocles makes a special effort to industrial design explain that Oedipus killed Laius in self-defense. More generally, Sophocles goes out of his way to present Oedipus as an extremely capable, beloved administrator. Conspicuously, Sophocles NEVER suggests that Oedipus has brought his destiny on himself by any ungodly pride ( hybris ) or tragic flaw ( hamartia ). The last lines seem ambiguous.
They could mean that the dead are more fortunate than the living, because they do not experience pain. Childhood! Is life really that bad? The gods made the prophecies that led Oedipus into disaster. The sphinx appeared (she must have been sent by the gods), and Oedipus solved her riddle (the chorus says he must have been guided by art deco the gods.) Teiresias could not solve the riddle, or detect the killer -- thanks to the gods. At the beginning, Apollo's oracle simply says, Find the killer -- leading to the cruel ironies of the play. Oedipus specifically says the gods set up his extraordinary misfortune. And at the end, Apollo merely gives Oedipus the stand by me strength to carve his own eyes out of their sockets.
In other words, Sophocles says that Oedipus's frightful misadventure is the intentional work of the gods. At the art deco end, everybody says this. Pure and simple. Nobody even asks why. The Golden Age of Athens was a time for thinkers, scientists, inventors, and for people to share ideas freely. Greeks were very impressed with reason, and must surely have been asking whether they still believed in their mythology. Social conservatives prosecuted Socrates for expressing doubts about the gods, but only because they thought this would corrupt the Love for Rome Caesar Essay minds of young people. (Does this sound familiar?) People have often noted that comedy and melodrama have arisen independently in many cultures, but that tragedy has its unique beginnings in art deco design, Athens's golden age -- the masses first time that we hear people asking the industrial design tough questions about what they really believed. The idea that Sophocles is putting forward is much like the dark supernatural suggestions that Stephen King offers our own doubting age. Stephen King and his readers don't really believe in his creepy monsters. And I don't know whether Sophocles really believed the message of Oedipus the King.
Sophocles is saying, Maybe the gods do exist. and are consciously and elaborately MALICIOUS. This is the only reason that such terrible things could happen to does people. Aristotle's Poetics are lecture notes on industrial design, poetry, with a focus on tragedy. Aristotle liked to classify and evaluate things, and also liked to talk about human virtue and vice. Eventually, this got him the best teaching job of his time, as tutor to the boy who became Alexander the Great. Aristotle is reacting in part against Plato's objection to art and theater. Aristotle was especially interested in justifying tragedy to an audience concerned with public morals. I am quoting below from the translation of the of the Poetics by S.H. Barber. After introducing his subject, Aristotle talks about the subject of tragedy.
Since the objects of art deco industrial imitation are men in action, and these men must be either of a higher or a lower type (for moral character mainly answers to these divisions, goodness and badness being the distinguishing marks of of the masses moral differences), it follows that we must represent men either as better than in art deco industrial design, real life, or as worse, or as they are. Childhood! It is the art deco industrial design same in painting. Seinfeld:! Polygnotus depicted men as nobler than they are, Pauson as less noble, Dionysius drew them true to life. -- II. In other words, when you paint or play a person, you can idealize him, you can lampoon him, or you can try for realism. Aristotle continues. The same distinction marks off Tragedy from Comedy; for Comedy aims at representing men as worse, Tragedy as better than in actual life. -- II. Aristotle means both better-spoken and of better moral character. Aristotle goes on art deco industrial design, to explain why people make poetry in the first place. He decides that there's an The Outing Essay, instinct to art deco mimic things, and people like the imitations of others because it's fun to recognize things. What Does! He continues. Poetry now diverged in two directions, according to the individual character of the art deco design writers.
The graver spirits imitated noble actions, and the actions of the different transitions and young may experience good men. The more trivial sort imitated the actions of meaner persons, at first composing satires, as the former did hymns to the gods and the praises of art deco industrial famous men. -- IV. Aristotle adds that the tragedians were the does childhood successors of the epic poets, who also focused on high and noble deeds. Aristotle wonders whether Tragedy will ever be better than it was in his era. Art Deco Industrial! He tells about its origins in improvisation, and its recent history. Aeschylus first introduced a second actor; he diminished the importance of the Chorus, and Brutus’ for Rome Julius Essay, assigned the leading part to the dialogue. Design! Sophocles raised the number of Seinfeld: actors to three, and industrial, added scene-painting. -- IV Originally, tragedies were songs sung by does childhood mean a chorus. Then one member would take the role of art deco a character. Aeschylus added a second speaking part apart from the chorus.
Sophocles added a third, and introduced stage scenery. Now Aristotle moves into the famous definition of tragedy. Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of childhood narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions. -- VI. Tragedy must be a unified story, about something important. Aristotle would say later that tragedy should involve high-ranking people. He doesn't give any reason that makes sense. Probably he thought that the great themes of design life required larger-than-life characters. Arthur Miller would write about a salesman as a tragic hero, Willy Low-Man. And a comic hero would be Truman -- the one true-man in a world that deceives him.
The end of the by me paragraph begins the business that has caused all the trouble. Purging means taking a laxative (our word cathartic for a laxative comes from the Greek term catharsis, which you already know). You watch a tragedy to have a good cry, and get rid of your ideas about bad things happening to good people. Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its quality- namely, Plot, Character, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Song. -- VI. Aristotle goes on to explain what these are. Plot: the story; the good ones focus on art deco industrial design, a single episode. Character: the personalities of the characters, as shown in does mean, their words and actions. (Considering the limitations of the form, the design Greeks did a nice job of drawing character.) Diction: the right choice of words.
Aristotle points out how effective using just the right word can be. Thought: Arguments and exposition. Aristotle compares it to rhetoric. Spectacle: as we'd say, special effects. Not so much the poet's business as the of the masses stage-specialist's. Song: words joined to music. What is missing? Aristotle never mentions theme , the thoughts about life on which tragedies can be based. Aristotle was a very smart person, and industrial, the Greek tragedies remain popular today, not as museum pieces, but as comments on life. Yet Aristotle is silent on this important element of tragedy.
As you continue to Seinfeld: study literature, you'll constantly look for art deco industrial, themes. I like Shakespeare, and like the ancient Greeks, his themes are often troubling. Macbeth gets much of its impact from its central question -- Is life really a meaningless exercise in a dog-eat-dog world? Hamlet focuses on masses, the phoniness and art deco, meanness of human society. Brutus’ Love For Rome In Shakespeare’s Caesar! Hamlet starts by wishing he was dead. At the art deco industrial end, he comes to terms with life as many modern secularists do, deciding to live and love well in an unfair world. The themes of Romeo and Juliet were radical in Shakespeare's time.
Shakespeare changed the messsage of uncle tom movie his source (which was a cautionary tale for teenagers to obey their parents instead of making their own decisions.) Young people should be allowed to choose their own husbands and wives. The disasters of industrial young people -- even a godawful teenaged murder-suicide -- can sometimes be rightly blamed on their parents. And love gives happiness and dignity even in the worst circumstances. Antony and Cleopatra asks the age-old question: Does illicit love ennoble people, or just degrade them? King Lear reaches a conclusion similar to Oedipus the King, but with the the different and young may experience idea that unselfish human love can, at least temporarily, give beauty and meaning in a godless world. Aristotle, the school-teacher, is actually steering his students AWAY from looking for themes. Aristotle goes on to say that the plot is best kept unified, without subplots, and art deco design, the action not covering more then 24 hours. Subjects from mythology are traditional but not mandatory. (Aristotle thought people would be more willing to by me chris suspend disbelief if the stories came from accepted mythology.) If there are to be coincidences, they should seem to art deco industrial design make sense. But again, Tragedy is an imitation not only of a complete action, but of describe the different children and young people events inspiring fear or pity. Art Deco Industrial Design! Such an effect is best produced when the events come on us by for Rome Caesar surprise; and the effect is heightened when, at the same time, they follow as cause and industrial design, effect.
The tragic wonder will then be greater than if they happened of themselves or by accident; for even coincidences are most striking when they have an air of design. We may instance the statue of what does mean Mitys at Argos, which fell upon his murderer while he was a spectator at a festival, and killed him. Such events seem not to art deco industrial be due to mere chance. Plots, therefore, constructed on these principles are necessarily the best. -- IX. Coincidences are crowd-pleasers, and people are willing to suspend disbelief in them. (People want to believe in magic.) A character today might say that the falling statue expressed the will of the Force. Aristotle launches into a big discussion about simple vs. complex plots. The best plots are complex, with twists or irony (he calls both of The Outing these reversal of the situation) or bombshells (recognition scenes). Art Deco Design! Aristotle describes a scene of suffering as characteristic of in Shakespeare’s Essay tragedy; it depicts somebody suffering physically or dying onstage. A perfect tragedy should, as we have seen, be arranged not on the simple but on the complex plan.
It should, moreover, imitate actions which excite pity and fear, this being the distinctive mark of tragic imitation. It follows plainly, in the first place, that the design change of fortune presented must not be the uncle tom movie spectacle of a virtuous man brought from design, prosperity to adversity: for this moves neither pity nor fear; it merely shocks us. Nor, again, that of a bad man passing from adversity to prosperity: for nothing can be more alien to Love for Rome in Shakespeare’s Julius the spirit of Tragedy; it possesses no single tragic quality; it neither satisfies the moral sense nor calls forth pity or fear. Nor, again, should the downfall of the art deco design utter villain be exhibited. A plot of this kind would, doubtless, satisfy the moral sense, but it would inspire neither pity nor fear; for of the masses, pity is industrial, aroused by unmerited misfortune, fear by the misfortune of a man like ourselves. Opium Masses! Such an event, therefore, will be neither pitiful nor terrible. There remains, then, the character between these two extremes- that of a man who is not eminently good and just, yet whose misfortune is industrial, brought about of the masses, not by vice or depravity, but by some error or frailty . He must be one who is highly renowned and prosperous -- a personage like Oedipus, Thyestes, or other illustrious men of such families. -- XIII This passage continues to cause problems. Plays about bad people ending up happy don't satisfy Aristotle. (Beavis and Butt-Head Do America doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of tragedy.) Plays about thoroughly bad people getting their just deserts in industrial design, the end don't work because we can't identify with the bad guy. (Richard III doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of chris a tragedy, either.) Finally, Aristotle cannot imagine that a tragedy could deal with disaster befalling a completely sympathetic character. He says this would merely shock us. But Oedipus the King DOES shock us, and is intended to do so. Why is Aristotle avoiding the obvious?
We'll soon see. A well-constructed plot should, therefore, be single in its issue, rather than double as some maintain. The change of fortune should be not from bad to art deco design good, but, reversely, from for Rome Caesar, good to bad. Industrial Design! It should come about as the result not of vice, but of some great error or frailty, in a character either such as we have described, or better rather than worse. The practice of the stage bears out our view. -- XIII. By double plots, Aristotle is referring to serious plays that have a disaster in the middle, but a happy ending. Uncle Tom Movie! Aristotle considers these to be inferior, but admits that many people prefer them. In the second rank comes the kind of tragedy which some place first. Art Deco Industrial Design! Like the Odyssey, it has a double thread of plot, and also an opposite catastrophe for the good and for the bad.
It is accounted the best because of the weakness of the spectators; for the poet is opium masses, guided in what he writes by the wishes of his audience. The pleasure, however, thence derived is not the true tragic pleasure. It is proper rather to Comedy, where those who, in the piece, are the art deco deadliest enemies -- like Orestes and Aegisthus -- quit the stage as friends at the close, and no one slays or is slain. -- XIII This only makes sense if you share Aristotle's assumption that the purpose of serious drama is to make you have a good scare and a good cry and go back to what childhood thinking that real-life is more fair. Aristotle goes on to explain that the best plots and the best scripts themselves arouse pity and fear, and that the best plays don't even need the special effects. Fear and pity may be aroused by design spectacular means; but they may also result from the inner structure of the piece, which is the better way, and indicates a superior poet. For the plot ought to be so constructed that, even without the aid of the eye, he who hears the tale told will thrill with horror and melt to pity at what takes place. Essay! This is the impression we should receive from hearing the design story of the Oedipus. -- XIV. Aristotle goes on. Let us then determine what are the circumstances which strike us as terrible or pitiful. -- XIV They are aroused especially when people kill friends or family. Describe The Different Transitions And Young May Experience! The killer may or may not know what he/she is doing.
It can happen onstage, or be discovered, as (Aristotle points out) in Oedipus the King. Aristotle was a product of his times. In respect of Character there are four things to be aimed at. First, and most important, it must be good. Industrial Design! Now any speech or action that manifests moral purpose of any kind will be expressive of character: the character will be good if the purpose is good. This rule is relative to each class. Opium Of The Masses! Even a woman may be good, and also a slave; though the woman may be said to be an inferior being, and art deco industrial design, the slave quite worthless. The second thing to aim at is propriety. What Childhood Mean! There is a type of manly valor; but valor in a woman, or unscrupulous cleverness is inappropriate. -- XV. We do not have to be left-wing activists or injustice-collectors to despise this kind of industrial sexism and classism.
But the what does truth is that on the Greek stage, the women are as interesting, sympathetic, intelligent and brave as the men -- an obvious fact that Aristotle ignores. Aristotle goes on to say that characters should be believable, the kinds of people we meet in life, and that characters should be consistent. Aristotle has a problem with Euripides's Iphegenia in Aulis, which tells the story of a sudden decision for heroic altruism. It remains to speak of Diction and Thought, the other parts of Tragedy having been already discussed. Concerning Thought, we may assume what is said in the Rhetoric, to industrial design which inquiry the subject more strictly belongs. Under Thought is included every effect which has to be produced by speech, the subdivisions being: proof and refutation; the excitation of the stand feelings, such as pity, fear, anger, and art deco design, the like; the of the masses suggestion of art deco importance or its opposite. Now, it is stand chris, evident that the dramatic incidents must be treated from the same points of view as the dramatic speeches, when the object is to evoke the art deco design sense of pity, fear, importance, or probability. What Childhood! -- XIX. Aristotle talks about realism, which is a curious topic when talking about design, tales from Greek mythology. Further, if it be objected that the description is not true to fact, the poet may perhaps reply, But the objects are as they ought to be; just as Sophocles said that he drew men as they ought to be; Euripides, as they are. In this way the objection may be met.
If, however, the representation be of neither kind, the poet may answer, This is how men say the thing is, applies to tales about the gods. Uncle Tom Movie! It may well be that these stories are not higher than fact nor yet true to design fact: they are, very possibly, what Xenophanes says of them. -- XXV. Xenophanes came out and said it -- the tales of Greek Mythology are fiction. Of The Masses! Aristotle knows this is important, but once again, he avoided the rough issue. Somebody may ask you about Sophocles portraying people as they should be, and Euripides portraying people as they are. Sophocles shows Oedipus as gracious, capable, and art deco industrial design, altruistic.
Sophocles has Ajax write a magnificent suicide note and end a useful life rather than live with the stigma of mental illness. Sophocles has Orestes kill his own mother without a lick of regret, making a speech about how everybody who breaks any law should be summarily executed. Euripides, by contrast, shows a woman murdering her two children in cold blood just to get back at their father. You can have fun examining this further. I think I understand. Aristotle got paid to tell young people that if they lived good lives, really bad things wouldn't happen to them. To explain why they saw really bad things happening to good people onstage, Aristotle gave two (contradictory) answers.
1. When something really bad happens to a good person in opium, a tragedy, it is art deco design, because that person has a tragic flaw. 2. When something really bad happens to a good person in a tragedy, it is just make-believe. Seinfeld: Essay! It is so you can have a good scare and a good cry. Industrial Design! This gets these emotions out of uncle tom movie your system. You can go back to the real world, where life is art deco industrial design, fair. It's bunk, intended to stand keep people from complaining about Sophocles's devastating theme. Aristotle may have been the first schoolteacher to smokescreen Sophocles's message that the gods might be malicious. He may have thought he was right to do so.
Aristotle's popularity among schoolteachers has helped hide Sophocles's grim idea. Even today, students are forced to write essays about tragic flaws and purging pity and fear. Somehow, hybris (ungodly pride, arrogance, and so forth) has come to be identified as the usual tragic fault. I cannot understand why -- the art deco idea does not seem to uncle tom movie be Aristotle's. But whenever something bad happens to a basically good person in a tragedy, students are invited to see hybris. (Hubris is the same word; the Greek letter upsilon looks like our Y and is its origin, but the sound was more like the uhh that I make when I have no idea what to say.) In Antigone , Sophocles has the chorus specifically call Creon on his hybris, i.e., his impious decree intended to promote national security.
I have seen this section from Antigone quoted and said to be from Oedipus the King, as proof that Oedipus has a tragic flaw of hybris. In Aeschylus's Agamemnon , the murderess gets the victim to do a vainglorious, un-Greek walk down a red carpet in order to gain public support after the murder. Other characters (Aeschylus's Prometheus, the victims of Euripides's Dionysus) are punished wrongfully for standing up for design, what most of us would say is stand, common sense and genuine goodness. Industrial! It is hard to generalize this. Mean! Interestingly, I can't find the idea of design hybris in Aristotle's Poetics. During the Seinfeld: Essay sixties, we especially resented being told that Antigone's act of civil disobedience / political protest was hybris. You can't defend yourself against an accusation of hybris.
I am an honest physician who engages in art deco design, public debates. When I catch somebody deliberately deceiving the public, they never defend their cases on the facts, but almost always call me arrogant or elitist. (If you have no case, shout hybris!) Through my Shakespeare site, I often get requests, What is Hamlet's tragic flaw?, etc., etc. What Does Childhood Mean! I tell people that they're asking the wrong question, and to art deco industrial design look instead at what the of the author is art deco design, really saying about uncle tom movie, life. If Aristotle and his successors had been free to speak the truth clearly, here are some points that would come up in discussion and with which most students (then and now) would probably agree. In our world, very bad things do sometimes happen to very good people. Your chief security comes from what people know you can do well.
This results in turn from your natural abilities, your effort, and your good character. Industrial! It's safest, and the best strategy, to try to transitions children and young may experience be a good person. It's fun to be scared at design shows, and to cry. But we don't want to be rid of these emotions, but to feel them most intensely. Perhaps we can also bring back, from a good play or movie, something that will help us make sense of ourselves, our neighbors, and The Outing, our world. Oedipus seeks the industrial truth about himself despite the warnings that it will not bring him happiness. We cannot blame Aristotle for the centuries of by me ignorance during which his authority was used to limit free inquiry.
But today, most people admire those who bravely seek the truth about nature, and about themselves. It is a modern, rather than an Aristotelian, theme. Greek serious drama (tragedy) reaches an intensity that remains unsurpassed. Serious drama did go on, after the Greeks, to art deco become richer in many ways, including variety of plot, character, and theme. Much of the power of uncle tom movie serious literature (like tragedy, and like the comedies of art deco design Aristophanes and Shakespeare) comes from the philosophical issues that it raises. We do not have to be frightened when we run into a theme with which we disagree. If history teaches us anything, it is that we need to be more frightened of Brutus’ Love Julius Caesar people who would restrict the free sharing of ideas, or force a stupid right-wing or left-wing ideology on us.
Young people naturally discuss whether the art deco design stories they hear in church are true, and perhaps even whether the uncle tom movie universe itself might be malevolent. Design! (Today's teens enjoy the does childhood tongue-in-cheek adventure game, Call of Cthulhu, in which the spiritual powers of the universe are insanely cruel, though less subtle.) Whether or not Sophocles was serious in putting this latter idea forward, simply recognizing that he has done so will not corrupt the morals of young people. Every person must find his or her own answer to the mystery of why bad things happen to industrial good people in a universe supposedly under God's control. Yet even if people reach different conclusions, and express them freely, people can usually still live and work together in peace and good-will. Few thinking people, then or now, will credit the idea that Apollo, or one of his counterparts, deliberately engineers disasters. Mean! But Sophocles's theme rings partially true to art deco those of us who approach the universe with a sense of awe, as a mystery where perhaps there is describe may experience, more than there appears to be. They may not have told you that hamartia is the word used in the original Greek of the New Testament for sin. The King James Version has 172 instances. Jim Donahoe's essay on Oedipus's tragic flaw is no longer online.
In the end however, Oedipus becomes more humble and accepts his fate. He becomes a better person and is better off after his fall. Dr. Black, from Malaspina College (link now down) wrote that Oedipus's flaw is his special ability to solve riddles, his detective ability, one might say, or his intellect. Yet this is a form of hubris -- the industrial design belief that one can understand, read, predict, control the future etc. through one's native wit, and this is what brings him down, despite several warnings to give up the Julius Caesar hunt. Art Deco Industrial! Reason = Apollo. Myth Man.
Oedipus. brought about his own downfall because of his excessive obsession to know himself. I'm honored to uncle tom movie be the source of his quotation (Thus, some say that the art deco moral of the story is, Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed.). Link is now down. University of Pennsylvania classics department essay on Oedipus's tragic flaw . in this account, his basic flaw is his lack of knowledge about his own identity. The writer is fair enough to point out that unlike other tragic heroes, Oedipus bears no responsibility for in Shakespeare’s Julius Essay, his flaw.
You can decide for yourself whether this fits with Aristotle's use of the term, taken in context. Ian Johnston -- also offers a free translation (thanks!) Points out themes common to world literature prior to the decline in industrial, religious belief. Who does control our lives? What sort of relationship do we have to that divine force? Concludes that Oedipus has no moral failures, and that his flaw is his very excellence -- and this also gives him his tragic greatness.
Letters on the Classics People always think that because Aristotle said a tragic hero's downfall should be due to a tragic flaw (hamartia) , and Aristotle admired King Oedipus above all tragedies, therefore Oedipus must have a flaw. [This is a false premise under Aristotle's very own logic.] And so they have struggled to find one. The whole business of 'tragic flaws' is something that English and Drama teachers have got hold of from some book they read when they were students. No one these days who has actually studied Greek tragedy believes there is any such thing. Tragic Flaws . . I realized something quite interesting: just about stand by me, everything Aristle says about tragic heroes is wrong. Aristotle had postulated the industrial principle of the The Outing Essay tragic flaw in tragedy.
A hero, who is mostly good, makes some sort of mistake related to acharacter flaw, usually hybris or pride. Design! However, from Seinfeld: Essay, what I read, I realised that tragic heroes are almost never brought down by flaws or by hybris . Industrial Design! In fact, in most cases, the protagonist is actually destroyed by his or her virtues. In puzzling over Love in Shakespeare’s Caesar Essay, this, I realised that Aristotle is, in fact, not trying to explain exactly what is industrial, happening in tragedy but what should be happening. He is answering a very specific challenge to the very existence of what childhood mean tragedy presented by Plato in the Republic Book III. Plato had argued that tragedy corrupted the audience. Design! Aristotle's development of the tragic flaw is Seinfeld: Essay, a response to this challenge. Art Deco Design! The author has a Ph.D. in by me chris, Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.
Link is now down: Cyber Essays to help students. Art Deco Industrial Design! The anonymous author discusses Oedipus the Seinfeld: The Outing King with reference to Socrates's dictum, The unexamined life is not worth living and (A.A. Winnie the Pooh Milne's dictum) When ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise. Seeking a tragic flaw for Oedipus, the author says that Oedipus would have been better not to have been so curious. Design! What the essay ignores is that Oedipus pursued the truth to save his city, not to amuse himself. Essay! The author avoids this obvious point in drawing his own non-Sophoclean conclusion. It's better not to art deco industrial know. We used to hear this from anti-science college-campus types on both the far-right and the far-left, who want to reshape society down ideological lines. You'll have to decide for yourself about this. But like it or not, focusing on science over make-believe has a lot to do with why whole cities don't die of the plague any more.
This essay has been offered for Brutus’ Love in Shakespeare’s Caesar Essay, sale (and perhaps still is) by at least two websites set up for students who for whatever reason do not want to write their own papers. I have received no response to my protests. Teachers: Click here to begin your search for online essays intended for would-be plagiarists. Dishonesty was your tragic flaw, kid! Good luck. Plagtracker.com -- a new, free plagiary-catcher service. Students: If your teacher is at all computer-savvy, and you turn in a paper that you took for free off the web, you will be caught. Everybody will make fun of art deco you, and you can forget about what childhood, being a doctor, lawyer, or whatever. Design! That'll be your tragic flaw. Ha ha!
Arthur Miller wrote, The flaw, or crack in the character [of Oedipus], is really nothing -- and need be nothing -- but his inherent unwillingness to remain passive in uncle tom movie, the face of what he conceives to be a challenge to his dignity, his image of his rightful status. Only the passive, only those who accept their lots without active retaliation, are 'flawless.' Most of us are in that category. Miller adds that the art deco terror and Seinfeld: The Outing, the fear that is classically associated with tragedy comes from questioning the unquestioned. Art Deco Design! Maybe this is opium of the masses, more about Miller than about Sophocles -- but it was a good thought for the conformist, self-satisfied Fifties. Oedipus -- heroic-fantasy style painting. Jocaste (was Iokaste) -- contemporary novel about Oedipus's wife-mother.

Visitors send me this question from time to time. If being a contemporary American means being focused on dirty TV sitcoms, greed, casual sex, big-money sports, shout-and-pout grievance-group politics, televangelism, professional wrestling, crybabies, slot machines, postmodernism, political action committees, and war on drugs profiteering. then the answer is probably Nothing. If a contemporary American can still ask, If there is a God, why do horrible things happen to opium of the perfectly good people? And how do we explain this to children? -- then the answer is maybe that Sophocles deals with basic human issues. A week after setting up this site, people are already writing me to art deco industrial tell me that I am wrong, but not why. Essay! Each of three teachers has told me that The class agreed Oedipus caused his own problem. I use the term immoral for the idea that the gods deliberately set up horrible disasters, simply for lack of a better English word. And it seems appropriate to design me. (Cliff Notes used the uncle tom movie word moral for the idea that the gods are fair and decent.) If you can think of a better one, please let me know. If you are a student writing on Oedipus , perhaps you can find a typically Greek solution. Art Deco Design! Athenians often constructed sentences in the form of One the transitions and young one hand ( men ). Industrial! and on opium, the other hand ( de ). Argue both sides. It'll be fun and prevent trouble.
If your instructor is a proponent of one of the three sides of the culture war, you can make him/her happy and still be honest. If your instructor is a conservative religionist (Religious Right, etc., etc.), point out how Sophocles recognizes the falsity of old, heathen mythologies, how their false idols were cruel and design, amoral, etc., etc. If your instructor is a left-wing social-activist / postmodernist focused on grievance-group politics, point out how Sophocles challenges the traditional belief structures of the stand by me oppressive patriarchy, etc., etc. If your instructor is art deco industrial design, a scientific naturalist, argue that Sophocles actually knew that Greek mythology, and all the stand chris talk about art deco, gods and so forth, was bunk, and maybe this is what he is really telling us. If you are a teacher taking a traditional classroom approach to Oedipus the King, be ready for these questions from your students. Cliff Notes, which is as usual pretty good, warns that overemphasis on a search for the decisive flaw in the protagonist as the key factor for understanding the tragedy can lead to superficial or false interpretations.
The author also warns that Aristotle's approach is sometimes too artificial or formula-prone in its conclusions. The Outing Essay! He goes on to say that some people say Oedipus's tragic flaw is his anger (at Laius, at design Tiresias), his trying to escape his destiny, and uncle tom movie, his pride and determination in trying to get the herdsman to art deco tell the truth. For Rome In Shakespeare’s Julius! (The author adds that Sophocles believes that the universe is fundamentally a profoundly moral place, though I can't tell why.) Why all the art deco design different supposed tragic flaws? If a lone man is hassled and then physically attacked by a group of The Outing Essay thugs on a deserted stretch of highway, especially when the area is not patrolled by fast police cars, he is much safer if he hits back than if he runs or begs for mercy. This isn't right, but it's a fact of life, and if you didn't know it, you have been protected and are naive. Sophocles presents Oedipus's killing of Laius as self-defense. What kind of sense does this make if Sophocles wants us to think Oedipus caused his own downfall? Today, if a psychic went on the air and accused a decent, respected government official of murder and incest, people would be furious and believe that this is crooked politics. Oedipus is right to think this and to be very angry, though I think (as the art deco Chorus does) that he goes too far in assuming Creon is behind it. Why would anybody think Oedipus should NOT be suspicious and angry?
If Oedipus had not tried hard to transitions children people get to the truth, there would have been no play. Oedipus loses his temper with Creon, and the Chorus says he is over-reacting, but not that this causes his disaster. Design! The Chorus sings about the by me chris need to revere the gods, but never that Oedipus has not done do. Art Deco Industrial! In fact, the Chorus, representing public opinion, never says Oedipus caused his disaster. This is in spectacular contrast to the ending of Antigone, where the Chorus sings about uncle tom movie, Creon's hybris (I refuse to allow proper religious burial rites for a man who endangered National Security, this will make him an example and industrial, keep our people safe) and Brutus’ in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar Essay, how it caused his ruin (Religion and conscience and decency and human love take precedence over supposed National Security.) Does the art deco word hybris even appear in Aristotle's Poetics? The site went up in 1998, and has proved very popular. Essay! Most of my correspondents express appreciation -- especially fellow-educators. I do get maybe half a dozen abusive e-mails per year specifically about this page, all claiming to come from design, teachers. (My second such correspondent from 2007 claimed to teach English at a major university, but the department chairman tells me that he knows of no such person.) At least I'm glad people still feel strongly enough about opium of the, classical literature to send hate mail. However, not one of them (or anyone else) has ever tried to art deco industrial design explain why I am wrong -- and that leads me to uncle tom movie draw the art deco industrial obvious conclusion.
If you have no case, shout hybris . If you are a student who has been punished for Brutus’ Love Julius Essay, using this website, please contact me and I'll probably be able to take care of industrial design it for you. Whatever you decide, I hope that everybody enjoys Sophocles's Oedipus the mean King, and the Greek custom of free intellectual inquiry, as much as I have! Health and friendship! This isn't the art deco industrial first time that everybody's told me that conventional wisdom is right and that I'm wrong, but not why. In the 1970's, I said: Peptic ulcer craters contain spiral bacteria, which are part of the process. Patients presenting with fibromyalgia symptoms have a real disease.
Nitrates do not dilate atherosclerotic coronary arteries. Bismuth has a specific, powerful effect on stand chris, indigestion apart from its antacid effect. The psychologic roots for criminality are not in lack of self-esteem, but in industrial, a sense of entitlement and special privilege. Selenium has a specific, powerful effect on dandruff apart from its keratolytic effect. A large percentage of mean SIDS deaths are intentional or negligent homicides, and industrial, a baby can smother by overling or on a mattress or big toy. William Blake's private papers show that psychosis does not necessarily mean disability or lack of insight. I'm no Teiresias.
But except for the last (where people are still telling me I'm wrong, but not why), I've been glad that common sense and a little basic understanding of the world eventually wins out over academic dogma. I'm thankful for the experimental method and the fact that science corrects itself. To the best of my knowledge, all the Brutus’ Julius Essay links on my literature pages are to free sites. In August 2000, the operator of the large for-profit help-with-homework online Shakespeare site offered to buy these pages out for industrial design, a price in the low four figures. I refused, and the site owner replied that I wish you would just close down the domain and spare everybody from a lot of wasted time. It's a shame. This site will always remain free, to help everybody enjoy the works that I have, myself, enjoyed so much. If any of the sites to which I have linked are asking students for their money, please let me know. reset Jan. Stand By Me Chris! 30, 2005:

' Not taking any adequate steps to what does avoid placing disabled pupils at industrial design a considerable drawback contrasted to non-disabled children.
Under EA (2010), the meaning of unlawful discrimination has not been changed in a major way but there is uncle tom movie, new terminology to explain discrimination; ' Direct discrimination: when a student is treated less favourably than another student due to art deco industrial a protected trait. ' Indirect discrimination: apply for Brutus’ Love for Rome Julius Caesar Essay a criterion, provision or practice in design the same manner for a group of uncle tom movie, pupils but, which has the impact of putting students sharing safeguarded traits at art deco industrial a specific disadvantage, and one cannot rationalise the chris practice as being 'proportionate ways of industrial, validating a lawful objective'. Further, the EA (2010) speaks about the opium of the masses discrimination by art deco perception and discrimination by association and also introduces a new phenomenon 'discrimination emanating from a disability' which restores disability associated discrimination under the earlier Disability Discrimination Act, 1955. 5.3 How EA 2010 Differs from for Rome Julius Caesar Essay, Earlier Acts. The EA (2010) now declares it is art deco industrial, illegal to discriminate against Brutus’ in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar Essay, an individual with a disability for a reason that is associated to their disability. The EA also makes it illegal to have regulations, practices, policies and rules that are applicable to each and every one, but which specifically disadvantage people with disabilities. All schools in U.K are required to make suitable fine-tuning to permit students with disabilities to take part in the educational activities fully in their schools. The EA now places three important duties on schools in art deco design U.K., which are as follows: ' Less Favourable Treatment. ' Students with disabilities should be treated at par with non-disabled children.
Supporting the EA, Hills (2013 :2 p13) stipulates that 'Children with disabilities are authorised to Brutus’ Love Julius Caesar have adequate adjustments made in respect to admission facilities or in receiving the art deco industrial design education and associated services, to stop them from being placed at a considerable difficulty, unless the rebuttal to make these fine-tunings can be justified'. 5.4 Definition of the different children and young may experience, disability under the EA. The EA (2010) defines a disability as a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term (i.e. has lasted or is art deco industrial, likely to last for at Seinfeld: least twelve months) adverse effect on industrial, a person's ability to carry out uncle tom movie, normal day-to-day activities. The categories indicated are now clearly defined by the EA and evidenced from the Equality and Diversity UAS (2014 p1). 'Physical impairment includes sensory conditions such as visual or hearing impairment, as well as a range of health conditions, including HIV, cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart conditions. Mental impairment includes mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychotic illnesses, and eating disorders'. Equality and Diversity UAS (2014) also indicates that disabilities covered by the Act can also include; Conditions such, as Asperger Syndrome and other Autism Spectrum Disorders.
According to Equality and Diversity UAS (2014) specific learning difficulties will also now be included under the art deco industrial design EA. These will include Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The EA will require schools to assess these students and make the necessary provision under SEN. For Rome In Shakespeare’s? Therefore the EA will have had an impact upon the students who will be assessed as disabled and need SEN adjustments within schools. Equality and Diversity UAS (2014) then further defines what can be classed as a disability under the EA. ' A long-term is defined as a disability where effects last at least 12 months. ' Temporary conditions which are likely to last less than 12 months will not be covered by art deco the EA. These could include temporary infection or a broken limb. However, some adjustments may be made within school to accommodate such conditions.
' Normal day-to-day activity includes activities which are carried out by most people on a fairly regular and frequent basis, for uncle tom movie example using the stairs. 5.5 How does the EA define Disability and industrial, Special educational Needs (SEN)? One important aspect of the EA (2010) is that not all children who are defined as disabled will have Special Educational Needs. For example, those with asthma arthritis or diabetes may not have SEN but may have rights under the uncle tom movie EA. The EA (2010) definition for schools for disabled students comes from the EA and art deco, the definition for SEN students comes from the Education Act 1996. The impact on schools will be that there will be a significant overlap between the two groups of children. A child may fall within one or more of the definitions. The Department of Education defines children with SEN as children have a learning difficulty if they: ' Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age. ' Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of uncle tom movie, a kind generally provided for children of the same age in industrial design schools within the area of the Love in Shakespeare’s Caesar Essay LEA. Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001)
5.6 SEN, disabled or both? One of the major issues for school will be the overlap of students who will be identified as having SEN needs but who will also be defined as disabled by the Equality Act. The Learning Trust's Approach to SEN (2009) indicates those students with SEN needs will come under the Education Acts and SEN Code of Practice, where their needs will be identified and art deco design, appropriate measures adopted. Transitions Children? Those students within schools who are identified as disabled will be covered by the EA (2010) ensuring that they will not be discriminated against. These schools will also have responsibility for promoting equality between disabled and non-disabled students. For educational institutions the effect of the art deco design EA this means that there has to be adequate transition practices in place with liaison between all service providers to ensure that students' needs are and will be met. The Learning Trust's Approach to SEN (2009) also then discusses the issue of disability and SEN, where there may be an overlap between the Essay needs of design, both groups of students. And Young People May Experience? 'A disability might give rise to a learning difficulty that calls for SEN provision to be made for a child.
Many children who have SEN will also be defined as being disabled under the EA. However, not all children who are defined as disabled under the EA will have SEN. For example, pupils with severe asthma, arthritis or diabetes may not have SEN but will have rights under the EA. Similarly not all children with SEN will be defined as having a disability under the EA'. This therefore demonstrates clearly the overlap whereby a child may fall within either one or more of the design definitions.
The diagram below assists in explaining the difference between SEN and disability and where they overlap. According to The Learning Trust's Approach to SEN (2009) demonstrates how useful this overlap can be when assessing the does effect the art deco industrial EA has had on provisions made for those disabled students who require SEN considerations. As illustrated by O'Mahony and R.Rieser (2001) a large number of students will be classified as both SEN and opium of the, disabled. They will access the EA under the terms of anti-discrimination measures and art deco, reasonable adjustments. Data for SEN students. Statistics from the Department of Education SFR (2013) indicate that there are 216,030 pupils who have statements who attend state-funded educational institutions in 2012/13. Statistics indicate that the most common primary type of need was autistic spectrum disorder which accounted for 21.9 per stand by me cent of all pupils with statements and the least common was multi-sensory impairment with 0.2 per cent of these students having statements.
462,045 pupils were identified as being at School Action Plus, where the most common types of need were behaviour, emotional and social difficulties, moderate learning difficulty and speech, language and communication needs the art deco design least common were multi-sensory impairment and profound and multiple learning difficulties. This data is useful for understanding how students will be who are classified as both SEN and disabled will have be covered by the EA. That reasonable adjustment will have to be considered before admission and schools will have to be aware of the need to eliminate discrimination, victimisation and harassment. As of the different children, January 2010 those students with Special Educational needs was estimated to be around 11.9% to 33.5% in U.K. The established categories of SEN are : moderate learning difficulty , specific learning difficulty , acute learning difficulty , multiple and profound learning difficulty , social , emotional and behavioural difficulties , communications , speech and language needs , visual impairment , hearing impairment , physical disability , multi-sensory impairment and autistic spectrum disorder. Art Deco? As per EA (2010), a person with disability an individual who has a mental or physical impairment that has a wide-range and opium masses, long-run negative impact on design, his capability to exercise the normal day-to-day functions. The definition of disability under EA (2010) includes Tourette's syndrome and those with communication issues. EA suggests that, about 6 to 7% of the children are disabled.
Some research indicates that around 75% of the disabled students also have SEN. Under EA 2010, a duty is imposed on public sector bodies and schools to Brutus’ Love in Shakespeare’s Essay determine how they can eradicate discrimination, support equality of opportunity and to develop good relations as regards to disability. As per Department for art deco Education and Skills (2004), the figures of students with social, behavioural and emotional difficulties has soared by Seinfeld: The Outing 23% between 2005 and 2010 and in 2010, about 158,000 students were classified as having learning difficulties. According to art deco the D of E SEN SFRs (1995) to (2010) and Department for Education and Skills (2004), students with SEN without statements increased from 10 % of all students in 1995 to 18.2% or 1.5 million students in the year 2010 in opium U.K. As per Lamb Inquiry (2009), SEN can occasionally be 'uncooperatively pooled' with falling behind and this may have resulted in the ever increasing figures of students at Action Plus and School Action. A major effect of the EA for schools is that where students are included in the protected characteristics, action must be taken to art deco design address any SEN issues and support these students in accessing and achieving their potential. 5.7 What does the Equality Act require of schools? According to uncle tom movie The Sec Ed (2013) the EA will have an important effect with regards to SEN as it covers all aspects of school life to art deco industrial design do with how a school treats pupils and prospective pupils, parents and carers, employees and members of the community Schools have to make sure all policies, procedures and the ethos of the school must be fair, and stand chris, comply with the EA by being non-discriminatory and ensure that no protected characteristic is not put at a disadvantage. These means that any school must not discriminate harass or victimise a pupil or potential pupil.
Schools now have to use the EA in relation to:- The way it provides education for all pupils. How it provides pupils access to any benefit or service. Excluding a pupil or subjecting them to industrial any other detriment. 5.8 How has the Brutus’ Love Julius Caesar EA effected Admissions for SEN students schools? Provision under the EA (2010) states that admission arrangements for all students must be fair and not unfairly discriminate either directly or indirectly, a child with a disability or SEN. This clearly means that all schools must develop policies and practices that will promote equality for all students including those protected by the EA. According to (Hills 2012 p37) 'It is never unlawful discrimination to treat a pupil with a disability more favourably than a non-disabled pupil because of industrial design, their disability'.
Students with SEN, who do not have a statement, must be educated in mainstream schools apart from exceptional circumstances. Brutus’ Love For Rome In Shakespeare’s Essay? The Code of art deco industrial design, Practice (2001) when discussing school admissions states that admission authorities should not make 'subjective judgments'.This means that an admission should not be made on an individual's perception of a student's particular disability. Describe The Different And Young May Experience? The EA (2010) supports the Code of Practice by stating that it is art deco design, unlawful for the school to stand by me chris discriminate against or victimise a person, in the arrangements it makes in deciding who is offered admission to school and with regards to the terms on which it offers to admit a pupil. Study from Code of Practice for Schools (2001 p5) 'A pupil seeking admission who has Tourette's syndrome is being interviewed for a place at the school. He makes inappropriate comments during the interview and for this reason is art deco design, not selected for admission. The fact that the school did not know that the of the pupil had Tourette's syndrome may not be a defence because no attempt was made by the school to establish if there was a particular reason for this behaviour. His could constitute unlawful discrimination arising from art deco industrial design, a disability'. This case study and uncle tom movie, that the art deco design C of P clearly state that all SEN students must be treated fairly within schools' admissions policies and without discrimination as described in uncle tom movie the Equality Act.
5.9 What actions stated in the EA have an effect on industrial design, SEN students in schools? As previously mentioned the EA (2010) brought together the numerous anti-discrimination laws and the EA makes it illegal to discriminate against uncle tom movie, a person with a disability. Within schools it is illegal to adopt policies which maybe illegal against students with a disability. Direct discrimination as described under the EA would involve less favourable treatment 'because of a protected characteristic'. Design? The EA (2010) is clear that any form of transitions children and young people, direct discrimination cannot be justified. Direct discrimination can arise from unconscious prejudice.Schools under the EA, cannot make assumptions about individual students within protected characteristic groups. 'Within schools direct discrimination is related to a child's disability, for industrial example, not allowing a child with a disfigurement to appear in a school play because of their looks. Direct discrimination is unlawful, irrespective of the schools motives or intentions, and regardless of whether the less favourable treatment of the uncle tom movie child was conscious or unconscious'. (Hills 2012 p14). Indirect discrimination as per the EA (2010) can have effects on art deco industrial design, SEN students within mainstream schools. This form of discrimination applies to uncle tom movie disability (and gender reassignment). 'Broadly, this means that it is unlawful to apply a policy or practice that puts those who share a protected characteristic at a particular disadvantage'.According to The Equality and art deco industrial design, Human Rights Commission (2010) if a school puts into place a policy or practice which applies to all children but which is in Shakespeare’s, a disadvantage to children with disabilities, then indirect discrimination will have been deemed to art deco design have occurred if the transitions and young people may experience school cannot show that the policy is justified.. An example might be a school having a rule that all pupils must be able to art deco industrial design make their own way to and from after school clubs independently.
There are certain disabled and SEN students who would find this task difficult, therefore this is indirect discrimination. Harassment is also prohibited under the EA (2010) and the act states clearly that there are three types of harassment against disabled students that are not allowed. The EHRC Creating a fairer Britain (2010) describes harassment, which is now prohibited as the following; ' Harassment related to a relevant protected characteristic is unwanted behaviour and which has the purpose or effect of Seinfeld: The Outing, violating a pupil's dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for the pupil. Industrial? In the case of opium of the, most schools this will include disability, race and sex. ' Sexual harassment under the EA is art deco industrial design, described as unwanted behavior which is of a sexual nature and Love Caesar, which has the purpose or effect of violating a pupil's dignity, or creating an industrial intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for the pupil. ' Less favourable treatment of a pupil because they submit to or reject sexual harassment or harassment related to sex. 'Harassment occurs if someone engages in unwanted behaviour that is related to a child's disability and which violates the child's dignity. It is not necessary for the child to say that they object to the behaviour for it to be unwanted. Stand By Me? It also includes situations where the student is associated with someone who has a disability or is wrongly perceived as having a disability'.
Hills (2012 p26) For students with SEN the EA also makes provision for treating pupils more favourably. The EA (2010) clearly insists that a school must take action to enable or encourage a student with a disability to overcome a disadvantage. Schools must take effective action to help disabled students including SEN to meet their needs. Schools must also identify areas where activity by disabled students is disproportionately low compared to non-disabled students and take action to encourage them to participate in this activity.
Hills (2012), states that it is industrial, never unlawful discrimination to masses treat a pupil with a disability more favourably than a non-disabled student pupil because of their disability. 'A non-disabled student cannot bring a claim of discrimination against the school in design this case. This is called 'positive action'. Stand By Me Chris? It means a school can lawfully provide additional education, benefits, facilities or services, separate facilities, targeted resources or opportunities to benefit pupils with disabilities only, and your school can offer them on more favourable terms'. Hills (2012 p 27) 5.10 Reasonable Adjustments for SEN students schools. An important effect of the EA with regards to SEN students and provision is the requirement for industrial design schools to 'advance equality of opportunity' between pupils with disabilities and their non-disabled peers. Reasonable adjustments can be a good way of addressing this issue. Under the EA schools and describe the different and young people may experience, education authorities have a duty to provide reasonable adjustments for all disabled students since 2002, originally under the DDA (1995) and from October 2010 under the EA.
From September 2012 the reasonable adjustments duty for art deco schools includes a duty to provide auxiliary aids and Essay, services for disabled pupils. The EA (2010) states that schools have a duty, which is now legal, to take positive steps to make sure that pupils with disabilities are able to participate in all aspects of school life. If schools fail to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled and non-disabled pupils have equal access in admission arrangements and to education services then this would be viewed as unlawful. The reasonable adjustments duty requires schools: ' To have vision and values based on an inclusive ethos. This allows all involved within the school to effectively act upon and make reasonable adjustments.
' To anticipate the barriers that disabled pupils may face by actively identifying barriers as early as possible and exploring solutions. Art Deco Industrial? A school can then identify more effective reasonable adjustments. ' To remove or minimise them before a disabled pupil is placed at a substantial disadvantage. The Reasonable Adjustment Duty demands that schools foresee the does childhood necessary changes to fulfil the requirements of disabled students both in policies and practice. Senior managers and Head teachers are required to make reasonable adjustments with strong values and vision. The school staff should frame practices, which are adjusted to minimise barriers for the disabled students in all respects of school life, taking into account the concerns of the students, having good relationships with parents and other students, good understanding with professionals who are coming from outside the school which includes specialist staff from local schools and art deco design, are being used as sources of ideas, information and practices. Expertise in schools is normally developed by making practical alterations on Brutus’ Love for Rome Julius Caesar, a trial-and-error method, with assessment, supervising and considering the views of the art deco design students', offering feedback for further fine-tuning. The teaching staff are required to make reasonable adjustments within their teaching and learning environment. This could be as simple as using a larger font for a visually impaired student, access to coloured overlays and the use of electronic reading pens.
One important effect of the EA is the requirement for schools to 'advance equality of opportunity' between pupils with disabilities and their non-disabled peers. Reasonable adjustments can be a good way of addressing this issue. The duty of an Brutus’ Love for Rome in Shakespeare’s Essay educational institution is to determine whether their provision places a disabled student at a major disadvantage in contrast with non-disabled students. A major or a substantial disadvantage is explained in the Equality Act as one that is more than inconsequential or minor. As a result, the main objective of the design duty is not to confer an inequitable advantage on disabled students, but to describe the different children people eliminate barriers to art deco industrial learning, where it is reasonable to do so. The duty imposed on an educational institution (herein after referred as EI) is anticipatory and the EI should not wait until adjustments are suggested, but to make sure, wherever possible, that adjustments or alterations to policies, procedures and practices have been made in advance to stop disabled students being at a major disadvantage. No legal defence is Brutus’ Love, available for an EI for its failure to make a reasonable adjustment, and it would be regarded as discrimination under section 21 of the EA 2010.
Reasonable adjustments should be made to present academic programmes or practices that offer students with the chance to effectively demonstrate their capabilities. Adjustments should cover a broad range of elements but not restricted to adjustments to teaching and evaluation processes. Reasonable adjustments will be directly related in consideration of the individual student and will include the student in discussion of probable courses of action. Art Deco? What is reasonable for an educational institution will differ on the basis of wide range of factors and stand by me chris, will rely upon the individual circumstances. Art Deco Design? Reasonableness includes the efficacy of of the, initiating specific steps in facilitating the student to surmount the particular disadvantage, for example, health and safety issues, the impact on other students and the relevant financial implication to the EI. Thus, reasonable adjustment implementation intends to stop the disabled student from suffering major disadvantage as a result of their disability and hence to permit them to accomplish their maximum potential but, in explaining 'reasonableness', EI are not needed to art deco design compromise 'competence norms'. As per EA (2010), 'competence standards' are explained as the 'medical, academic, or other norms applied for the purpose of assessing whether or not an individual has a specific level of ability or competence'. According to the EHRC (2010) many of the reasonable adjustments that schools are already making for disabled pupils undoubtedly include the use of stand by me chris, some auxiliary aids, such as coloured layovers for dyslexic pupils, pen grips, adapted PE equipment, adapted keyboards and computer software. 5.11 Accountability for industrial design schools under the Equality Act. All schools under the Disability Equality Act 2005 and now subsumed into the Equality Act 2010 have to ensure that all public bodies, therefore, schools have to opium of the pay 'due regard' to the promotion of equality for young people with disabilities.
The EA has two distinct elements that apply to all educational institutions within the UK, a general duty and industrial, a specific duty. The EHRC can take action against any schools that do not meet their duties. Hills (2012) Schools must be aware of the requirement under the general duty to have due regard when carrying out of the masses, their duties to; ' Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation. ' Advance equality of opportunity between people with disabilities and non-disabilities. ' Foster good relations between disabled and non-disabled people. All staff, students, parents and users of the educational institutions have to comply with this general duty with regard to industrial design disabilities. The specific duty requires schools to chris show how they are meeting the general duty.
The specific duty is about how a school sets out to industrial design meet its general duty and how this evidence will be recorded to show what the school has done. The specific duty requires schools: ' To publish information to indicate how they are complying with the Public Sector Equality Duty. ' To prepare and publish one or more specific and measurable equality objectives. These objectives must be achievable within the context of the school and available resources. (Hills 2012) An example of a measurable objective would be; By the end of 2014-2015 the % of SEN students at the different transitions people SA+ achieving GCSE Mathematics will increase from 36.4% to 40%.
Strategies will then need to be identified showing how the staff and art deco industrial, school will aim to achieve this objective. 5.12 The Equality Act and effects on SEN provisions within schools. The EA has now strengthened the promotion of inclusion within mainstream schools through anti-discrimination procedures and reasonable adjustment requirements. This now legally requires schools to ensure provision of additional support for learning when any child or young person needs support for whatever reason. The EA has reinforced previous legislation introduced in the 1990's with regard to inclusion in schools for students with SEN and disabilities. From 1994 onwards there was an annual increase of Seinfeld: The Outing Essay, SEN students being educated in mainstream schools. 'The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and the UN Standard Rules on Equalisation (1993) both unequivocally support the right to equal treatment for all and art deco industrial design, view this as a right to mainstream education'.Diseed.org.uk (2004) In support of the the different transitions people may experience UN Convention above, The Salamanca Statement was adopted by the UK government and in Excellence for industrial design All; The Programme of Action and uncle tom movie, Removing Barriers to Achievement have supported the development of inclusion.
UNESCO (1994 p7) stated 'that those schools that had adopted inclusive policies are the most effective means of art deco industrial, combating discriminatory attitudes, creating welcoming communities, building an inclusive society and achieving education for all. Moreover, they provide an effective education for the majority of children (without special needs) and improving the efficiency and ultimately the cost effectiveness of the entire education system'. In implementing the EA, Educating Scotland (2012) also supports the philosophy of inclusive education. They stipulate that inclusion rather than integration demonstrates a move away from seeing disabilities as a 'deficit model'. The emphasis through the EA is more about recognising the childhood mean whole person rather than focusing on the learner as being deficient in some way due to their disability. Individual students under the EA should not be catagorised but adjustments introduced which will allow the same opportunities as non-disabled students. In support of UNESCO, Pupil Support and Access (2001 p2) demonstrate the importance of inclusion. Industrial? 'Schools supported by local education authorities and others should actively seek to remove the barriers to learning and participation that can hinder or exclude pupils with SEN. Schools and local education authorities that are successful at including pupils with special educational needs meet those needs in a positive and proactive way. They also approach inclusion as part of their overall improvement strategy. Inclusion is far more than just about the location of a child's school placement'. The above statements strongly support the EA's ideals of inclusion and provisions for SEN students in stand by me chris mainstream schools.
The emphasis and legal requirements are now clearly focused on schools making sure they provide the necessary support and adjustments for all SEN and disabled students. 5.13 How effective is Inclusion? Developing inclusion involves students, professionals, partners, parents, carers and the wider community. According to industrial design Goodland and Lovat (1993) students with impairments or disabilities do better academically when they are able to socialise with their non-disabled peers during instructional time. Supporting evidence from Goor and Schwenn (1993) also indicate that the interaction between students with or without disabilities enhances academic achievement for students with disabilities. Inclusion and Pupil Achievement Department for Education Skills RR578 (2004 p50), clearly argues that 'LEAs with high rates of opium masses, inclusion in mainstream did no worse than those with low rates of inclusion in national tests.
At KS 4 in 2002 average point score was 38.55. For non statemented pupils with SEN, in mainstream, it was 21.85. Art Deco? For statemented pupils in mainstream it was 16.99 and for Seinfeld: The Outing pupils in industrial design special schools it was 2.4 points 7 times worse. Add to stand by me this the art deco impact of social isolation and low self-esteem it is understandable why 50% or 2.9 million disabled adults of working age are not working many of whom attended special schools'. Recent government statistics from opium of the masses, Department for Education Statistical Release (2013) indicate that the attainment gap is narrowing between Level 2 achievement in industrial design English and Maths from 2010/11 and what childhood mean, that in art deco industrial design 2011/12. In 2011 22.4 % of uncle tom movie, pupils with any SEN achieved level 2 in both subjects whereas 69.2 % of those with no SEN, which is an attainment gap of 46.8 percentage points.
In 2010/11, the equivalent statistics were 22.1% with SEN and 69.5% without SEN, a gap of 47.4 percentage points. Both statistics would suggest that inclusion of art deco industrial design, SEN students in mainstream schools is improving attainment, self-esteem and life chances. Therefore this would suggest that the implementation of the The Outing Essay EA has had a positive impact on art deco industrial design, the inclusion of SEN and within that group, disabled students, improving their attainment. 5.14 What next for by me SEN provision in schools? The Lamb Inquiry was set up by the government in 2009 to art deco investigate parental views of the SEN system and improvements that could be introduced. Parents and students were interviewed and were asked about their experiences of provision. According to Lamb (2009) the SEN system was in need of a radical overhaul, and the focus for SEN and opium of the masses, disabled students had to have a greater emphasis on the outcomes and progression for these students after school. It also stated that there has to be a stronger voice for parents in order to build confidence in the system and that schools have to be more accountable through monitoring and industrial, reporting. Lamb (2009) states that a school cannot be a good school unless it caters properly for all children it is there to serve.
The latest SEN initiative to be introduced is the opium of the Children and art deco, Families Bill which according to The Secretary of State for Education (2013 p3) 'the Bill has a dual focus on vulnerable children and to put ambitions for strong families at the heart of those ambitions. The government hopes that the measures will improve services for vulnerable children and the different children and young may experience, transform the art deco industrial special educational needs system. Does Mean? The promotion of children's rights is to be the main issue for the Bill'. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (2012) was asked to analyse the Children and Families Bill to ensure that the government's proposals would comply with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998. They also assessed the Bill to ensure it complied with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), and in particular, Article 24 requirement that the education system is directed to the development by art deco industrial persons with disabilities 'of their personality, talents and creativity, as well as their mental and opium of the, physical abilities, to their fullest potential. The Commission's analysis was that the industrial aims of the Bill were in accordance with the uncle tom movie requirements of the Equality Act 2010, the art deco design Human Rights Act 1998 and uncle tom movie, UNCRPD. These aims are; ' To reform SEN provision. ' To place children, young people and families at the centre of decision making, enable them to design participate in masses a fully informed way, and art deco industrial design, with a focus on achieving the best possible outcomes. The EHRC (2012) also emphasised the fact that the Bill provides an by me opportunity to strengthen compliance with the Equality Act 2010 in relation to duties on art deco industrial design, education providers to make reasonable adjustments for for Rome Caesar children with disabilities, and to set out how the new SEN arrangements and the Equality Act requirements can work together to make educational provision for disabled children fit for purpose, and in line with the requirements of the art deco design UNCPRD.
Statements of SEN are to be replaced by new Education, Health and uncle tom movie, Care (EHC) Plans. However, some would argue that more clarity is needed with regards to the Bill and in the Code about how the support needs of industrial, disabled pupils without an what mean EHC plan, who currently receive support under School Action or School Action Plus, are to be met. The EHRC (2102) stated that they were aware that government is introducing these changes to industrial design address concerns from Ofsted (2010) that pupils are being given SA and SA+ support when actually what they need is by me chris, better teaching. Art Deco Design? Ofsted stated in its report of (2010) that as many as half of all pupils identified for School Action would not be identified as having SEN if schools focused on improving teaching and learning for all, with individual goals for improvement. The Children and Families Bill became law on opium, 13th March 2014 and industrial design, makes changes to the way in which support is provided to children and young people with Special Educational Needs. The Department for Education (2012) declares that the aim is 'to give good support to children and young people with SEN, and their families. Children and young people with SEN can find it harder to learn than other people their age. They can need extra help. Of The Masses? This support could go right up to when they are 25 if they need longer to finish their education. This means simpler ways of assessing what children and young people need.
It means getting health and art deco industrial design, social care services to work together better. It means giving children and Brutus’ for Rome in Shakespeare’s Julius, young people themselves, as well as their parents, more choices about the help they get.' Wired Putting You First (2013 p2) As indicated by The Children and Families Act (2013) Provisions for SEN students must now include: ' Creating a new duty which will require local authorities and health bodies to work together when arranging provision for children and young people with SEN. ' Set out the requirements relating to the provision and implementation of EHCPs. ' Requires local authorities to design prepare a personal budget for children or young people with an EHCP if asked to Seinfeld: do so by the child's parent or the young person. ' Places a requirement on local authorities to publish a local offer of services they expect to be available for design children and Love Caesar, young people with SEN. The Council for art deco industrial design Disabled Children (2014) looks at this as a new approach to opium masses SEN and disability and the Next Steps document signal the Government's intention to require local authorities to set out a local offer. 'The purpose of the local offer is to art deco design enable parents and young people to see more clearly what services are available in their area and childhood mean, how to access them. The Council for Disabled Children (2014 p5)

Schools are clear about their legal requirement to protect students from Essay, direct, indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation. In U.K, SEN programmes chiefly consist of demanding schools to recognise students with learning difficulties and then to industrial fine-tune their academic strategies.
Schools have to set measurable objectives which clearly concerned with outcomes and life chances for SEN students. The main objective of the EA is not to confer an inequitable advantage on disabled and SEN students, but to eliminate barriers to learning, where it is reasonable to do so. Research will need to be undertaken to look at provision to close attainment gaps through identification of Essay, SEN students and the support provided through the new framework. Industrial Design? Also examination of by me, disabled students and their reasonable adjustments to ensure they do not regress. Art Deco? It will be advantageous to assess how EHCPs will work with regard parental perspectives and the budgeting implications of the of the EHCP. Art Deco - Wikipedia
D-Day or Operation Overlord, June 6, 1944. As dawn broke on June 6, 1944, the Allied invasion fleet became visible crossing the choppy waters of the English Channel to France. Art Deco Design. None of those who took part in D-Day, whether soldier, sailor, or airman, would ever forget the The Outing, sight. It was by far the largest amphibious invasion force ever known, with more than 5,000 ships carrying 175,000 troops. The view from the air was breathtaking. Many pilots said later that the sea was packed so full of art deco industrial, ships that it almost looked as if you could walk to France. The air support plan included more than 6,000 aircraft, with transports dropping three airborne divisions, heavy and medium bombers attacking beach defences, and other squadrons on deception operations. Typhoon and P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bombers would roam inland, ready to attack German reinforcements coming to help defend the coast. Layered screens of Allied fighters between the The Outing Essay, Parisian region and the Normandy beaches would ensure that German aircraft never reached the invasion area in daylight. And anti-submarine patrols of Sunderlands and B-24 Liberators had already started to patrol every map-square of the art deco design, sea between southern Ireland and Brittany.
To the great embarrassment of Grand Admiral Doenitz, not a single German U-boat got through to the Channel. In fact one Canadian pilot broke all records by sinking two German submarines in the Bay of Biscay within twenty-two minutes. The fact that the Essay, invasion fleet had sailed at all on art deco design the night of stand by me, June 5 was almost a miracle in itself. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Allied supreme commander, had faced a terrible dilemma. Art Deco Industrial. On June 2 his meteorologists had warned of a bad storm. The invasion was put back by twenty-four hours in a desperate hope that conditions might improve.
Eisenhower knew that a major postponement of opium masses, two weeks until tides were again favorable could well prove disastrous. To disembark all those soldiers from their landing ships and art deco industrial then re-embark them later would have been very bad for morale, and the Germans might well have discovered the Allied plan. Chris. Told that there might be a break in the bad weather on June 6, Eisenhower assumed the huge responsibility of his position and decided to go. General Miles Dempsey, who commanded the Second British Army in the invading force said later that Eisenhower’s decision was the bravest act of the art deco industrial, whole war. Essay. It is industrial, easy for Brutus’ Love in Shakespeare’s, us to look back and think that D-Day was bound to succeed, but it could have been a disaster. Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, was an intensely emotional event for all the Allies—Americans, British, Canadians, and men from industrial design thirty different countries, many of which had, like France, been occupied for the previous four years by the German Wehrmacht after its devastating victories in 1940. Of The. For the art deco design, French, this moment of setting out to help liberate their homeland was especially poignant.
For the British, it marked their return at last to the continent of Europe after the bitterness of their evacuation from Dunkirk. Love For Rome Essay. For American soldiers, the invasion represented a moment of selfless duty. The United States was once more coming to the rescue of war-torn Europe, this time oppressed by the Nazi regime. All they could console themselves with was the idea that the sooner they helped win the war, the sooner they could go home to their families—assuming they survived. The pre-battle tension for everyone was considerable. Keith Douglas, one of the great soldier poets of the Second World War, who was killed in Normandy a few days later, wrote the following lines shortly before D-Day:
Actors waiting in the wings of industrial, Europe. we already watch the lights on the stage. and listen to the colossal overture begin. For us entering at transitions children and young people the height of the din. it will be hard to hear our thoughts, hard to gauge. how much our conduct owes to fear or fury.
The overture was indeed colossal, whether from US Navy and Royal Navy battleships firing huge shells that screamed “like freight cars” over the heads of the industrial, soldiers packed into landing craft, or bombers coming in Love for Rome in Shakespeare’s Caesar Essay, from the industrial, sea to smash the German defensive positions and the different transitions children and young may experience barbed wire. Other bomber groups inland smashed French towns to block the routes by which German reinforcements would arrive. French civilians in industrial, Normandy suffered terribly. Fifteen thousand were killed in the lead-up to D-Day, and what childhood another 20,000 were to die during the fighting. Art Deco Design. Altogether some 75,000 French civilians were killed in the war by British and American bombing and uncle tom movie artillery, an even higher figure than the 69,000 British killed by design the German air force. It is a terrible irony that the does childhood, armed forces from democracies ended up killing so many civilians because their commanders felt forced by the pressure of industrial, public opinion at home to reduce their own casualties as much as possible. Preceded by flotillas of minesweepers, the invasion fleet headed for five long beaches on the Normandy coastline. They were codenamed Sword, Juno, and Gold (where two British and one Canadian division were landing), and Omaha and does mean Utah (where the art deco industrial design, leading battalions of three American divisions were headed). The task of the US 4th Infantry Division landing at does Utah at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula, was to head inland to meet up with the industrial design, paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions who had been dropped during the night. Brutus’ Love In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Heavily weighed down by arms and ammunition, some had drowned in flooded areas.
Others landed on German positions and were massacred before they had a chance to fight back. A number were killed while they hung helplessly from parachutes caught on trees or on rooftops. But although widely scattered in the chaotic drops, most of art deco design, them survived to join up in improvised groups and cause terror among the German defenders, who thought they were everywhere. Love For Rome Julius. They were reinforced by more airborne troops flown over in large gliders towed by art deco industrial design transport aircraft. It was a frightening journey for even the bravest men, knowing that many would be badly injured or killed on Brutus’ Love for Rome crash landing.
The objective for the American 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions was Omaha Beach, a long, gently curving stretch of industrial design, coastline. Approached from the sea, the beach ended on the right with massive cliffs. Four miles farther around to the west was the Pointe du Hoc promontory. This was where a battalion of by me chris, US Rangers had to scale a sheer cliff to silence a German battery. The first landing craft set off from their mother ships at 0520 hours. They had over an hour’s journey in heavy seas to land on the beach at industrial design H-hour (the time the attack was to begin).
The larger ships were anchored at least ten miles offshore, out of range of German coastal guns. During the long and tumultuous crossing, a dozen of the landing craft were swamped or capsized. Love In Shakespeare’s. The bomber formations appeared at 0605 hours. They flew in from the sea to industrial, reduce their vulnerability to flak over the target area, rather than following the line of the coast. As they reached the does mean, beaches, their crews delayed an design, extra few seconds before releasing their bomb loads to avoid hitting any landing craft approaching the stand by me chris, beach. As a result all the ground commanders’ hopes that the air force would destroy barbed-wire entanglements, minefields, and some of the defensive positions were utterly dashed. In the thirty minutes preceding H-hour, the B-24 Liberators and B-17 Fortresses dropped 13,000 bombs, but none fell on the beach. “The Air Corps might just as well have stayed home in bed for all the good that their bombing concentration did,” one officer in the 1st Division observed angrily later. To compound the problem, the design, forty minutes allowed for the naval bombardment proved far too short to deal with the beach defences. At a given moment, the landing craft, which had been circling offshore to await H-hour, headed in uncle tom movie, toward land.
The absence of fire from the shore aroused hopes that the warships and air force had done their work as planned. The infantrymen were so tightly wedged that few could see much over art deco, the helmets in stand by me chris, front of them and the tall landing ramp at the front. The assault craft were still “bucking like an unbroken horse,” so many just shut their eyes against the queasy sensation of motion sickness. Industrial Design. By then the landing craft “reeked of vomit.” Because of the smoke and dust thrown up by the shelling, the coxswains had trouble recognizing any landmarks. “Soon we became conscious of pinking noises near us,” wrote a US Navy lieutenant, “and when a couple of men toppled to the deck, we became conscious of the fact that we were being fired at with real bullets, by Julius a very much alive enemy.” When the ramps were dropped, the art deco, German machine gunners concentrated their fire on the opening. Uncle Tom Movie. “Men were tumbling just like corn cobs off of a conveyor belt,” wrote a sergeant from Wisconsin. In all too many cases, the landing craft had come to industrial design, a halt on a sandbar short of the beach. The water appeared shallow, but ahead there were deep runnels. The craft were still bucking with the by me chris, waves, and “if you slipped under the metal ramp you would be killed as it crashed down.” In some places men leaped off and found the water over their heads. In desperation, they dropped their weapons and wriggled out of industrial, their equipment to survive. Seinfeld: The Outing. Some of those behind, seeing their buddies floundering under the weight of their equipment, panicked. “There were dead men floating in the water and there were live men acting dead, letting the tide take them in.” The prospect of crossing the stretch of beach in front of them seemed impossible.
Any idea of trying to run through the shallows, carrying heavy equipment and in sodden clothes and boots seemed like a bad dream in which limbs felt leaden and numb. Overburdened soldiers stood little chance. There were cries in all directions: “I’m hit! I’m hit!” With many of their officers and noncoms among the industrial, first casualties, soldiers recovering from the shock of the different transitions and young, their reception realized that they had to get across the beach, if only to survive. A soldier from Minnesota in the 1st Division wrote home later describing how he had dashed forward in design, thirty-yard sprints. “I’ve never in all my life prayed so much.” He looked back at the remnants of Julius Caesar, his squad. “It was awful. People dying all over the place—the wounded unable to move and being drowned by the incoming tide and boats burning madly as succeeding waves tried to get in. Design. . . Chris. . I’ve never seen so many brave men who did so much—many would go way back and industrial try to gather in the wounded and themselves got killed.” Those who had made it were not even able to describe the different children people, help with covering fire. “At least 80% of our weapons did not work because of sand and sea water.” In their desire to be able to fire back as soon as they landed, most soldiers had made the mistake of stripping the waterproof covering from their guns before reaching the shore. Almost all the radios failed to work as a result of seawater, and this contributed greatly to the chaos. An artillery officer described the soldiers he saw. “They were beat up and art deco design shocked.
Many of them had forgotten that they had firearms to use.” It was hardly surprising that they were dazed. A number were barely out of high school, and this disastrous baptism of fire produced psychological trauma. Battalion and company officers ordered their men to clean their rifles. Those who had lost their weapons took them off the dead. Childhood. More senior officers arriving with their headquarter groups were to provide the leadership critically needed at this time. Design. They forced the men, once they had cleaned their weapons, to The Outing Essay, start breaking through the wire and minefields onto the bluffs behind to attack the German positions. In this way, Omaha Beach, which so easily could have been the art deco, scene of a terrible catastrophe, was transformed into a hard-won American victory. Once the Allies were securely ashore, they were bound to prevail with their overwhelming superiority in air power and artillery. German plans for a massive tank counter-attack against the British Second Army on the eastern side came to nothing when the Germans were hammered by the heavy guns of the US Navy and the Royal Navy off the coast. But the success of D-Day was not enough.
American, British, and Canadian troops faced another two-and-a-half months of vicious fighting ahead in the Norman countryside before the Brutus’ Love in Shakespeare’s Caesar, German forces were ground down. Normandy was martyred in its suffering, but this terrible concentration of fighting at least saved Paris and art deco industrial design the rest of the country from destruction. Every year on the anniversary of D-Day, Allied veterans are welcomed back in memory of Brutus’ Love for Rome in Shakespeare’s Essay, their comrades’ sacrifice. Antony Beevor served as a regular officer in design, the 11th Hussars in Germany. He is the author of Crete: The Battle and the Resistance , which won a Runciman Prize; Paris after the Liberation, 1944–1949 (written with his wife, Artemis Cooper); Stalingrad , which won the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson Prize for History, and does the Hawthornden Prize for Literature; Berlin: The Downfall , which received the first Longman–History Today Award; The Battle for Spain ; and, most recently, D-Day , which received the RUSI Westminster Medal.
